Why Properly Packing Books Is Important

When it comes to moving books, properly packing books is essential to ensure their safety and longevity. Books are not only a source of knowledge and entertainment, but they also can hold sentimental or monetary value. Here are a few reasons why taking extra care in packing books is important:

Protecting Books From Damage During the Move

Books are fragile and can easily get damaged if not packed correctly. Stacked books can shift during transportation, resulting in bent pages, torn covers, or even broken spines. By properly packing your books, you can minimize the risk of damage and keep them in pristine condition.

Preventing Spine and Cover Damage

Books with delicate spines or covers are particularly vulnerable during a move. Without proper protection, the constant jostling and stacking can lead to creases, tears, or even detached covers. By using appropriate packing materials such as book boxes, packing paper, or bubble cushion, you can safeguard the spines and covers from unnecessary wear and tear.

Preserving the Condition of Valuable or Collectible Books

If you have valuable or collectible books in your collection, it’s crucial to know how to pack books for moving carefully. These books may have irreplaceable content or hold significant monetary value.

By using acid-free tissue paper, U-Haul book boxes, or bubble cushion, you can ensure your precious books remain undamaged during the move.

Properly packing books not only protects them from damage but also makes unpacking and organizing them at your new place much easier. Take the time to pack your books with care, and they’ll continue to bring joy and knowledge for years to come.

Gathering the Right Packing Materials

Three U-Haul book boxes are stacked on top of one another.

When it comes to moving books, packing them properly is crucial to ensure their safety during transit. For this to happen, you’ll need to gather the right packing materials. Here are some key items you should have:

Choosing the Appropriate Box and Size

It’s important to find and select boxes that are strong enough to hold the weight of your books. While most books are small. After a while, they start to get heavy.

Of course, you only need to have one choice in mind for your boxes. The U-Haul book box.

The U-Haul book box was designed to move or ship your books. The box is 12” x 12” x12”, which is the perfect height for most books. It’s also easy to lift and carry the book box as well.

The box holds up to 65 pounds. While you can fill your box up to 65 pounds, we recommend keeping the boxes around 30 to 35 pounds, so it’s not too heavy for you or your Moving Helper to lift and carry. Your safety is paramount.

If you need a slightly taller box, you can use the U-Haul small moving box as well. It’s 16 3/8” x 12 5/8” x 12 5/8” and can hold up to 65 pounds as well.

Using Packing Paper and/or Enviro-Bubble for Added Protection

To safeguard your books from potential damage during the move and from each book next to one another, consider wrapping them in packing paper or enviro-bubble. These materials provide an extra layer of cushioning to absorb any shocks or impacts during transportation.

At Moving Help, we prefer to use packing paper first and then use bubble cushion afterward if needed. U-Haul packing paper is clean, white newsprint that is acid-free and ink-free. The protection is fantastic for books.

If you have a valuable, monetary, fragile, or cherished book, you can use bubble cushion as an extra layer of protection. This way, you use packing paper first, and then wrap around enviro-bubble around the whole book or just the edges — you decide — and the cover and inside pages definitely will be protected from anything.

Securing Packing Tape and Markers for Labeling

Properly sealing your boxes with packing tape is essential to prevent them from accidentally opening during the move. U-Haul has the best paper packing tape for moving boxes, so you’ll be sure to sleep at night knowing your boxes are securely taped.

You should make sure your box is taped at the bottom of the box and on top of the box. In fact, you might consider taping the bottom of the box two or three times instead of just one time.

Additionally, make sure to label each box with markers to indicate its contents. Don’t just label the box “Books.” Be descriptive by writing what genre or some of the titles of your books inside the box.

This will help you stay organized and easily locate your books once you arrive at your new destination. You also should take a picture of what’s inside your box and then when the box is finished. You also can write what’s in the box and keep the notes organized on the U-Haul app.

Finally, if your book box is heavy or fragile books are in the box, be sure to write “Heavy” or “Fragile” on the outside of the box. You might even use arrows indicating which way is up.

By ensuring you have these essential packing materials, you can protect your books and make the moving process smoother and more organized.

Organizing and Sorting Your Book Collection

One of the most challenging tasks when moving is packing up your beloved book collection. Organizing and sorting your books not only helps you declutter but also ensures a smooth transition to your new home.

Here are some tips to help you efficiently pack your books:

Determining Which Books to Keep, Donate, or Sell

Before you start packing, take some time to assess your book collection. While I’m sure you own a beloved collection, you’ll want to depart from part of your treasured collection.

You should separate books into three categories:

A woman begins to place one of her books into a box while her other hand holds a stack of books.

  1. Keep
  1. Donate
  1. Sell

If you didn’t enjoy the book, don’t like the author’s writing style, or just don’t plan on reading the book ever again, consider moving it to your donate or sell piles. Books that hold sentimental or practical value should be kept in the keep pile. It’s OK if this step takes a while, or you need to go through your collection several times to organize all three piles.

Categorizing Books by Genre, Author, or Size

Once you’ve decided which books to keep, it’s helpful to categorize them. You can organize them by:

  1. Genre
  1. Author
  1. Size

At Moving Help, we prefer to organize by size because it can make packing the books into boxes easier and faster. If that doesn’t work for you, that’s OK too. You need to figure out what works the easiest and fastest for you.

Creating an Inventory or Catalog for Easy Reference

To simplify the unpacking process, consider creating an inventory or catalog of your book collection. This can be done manually in your phone’s notes or by using the U-Haul app.

Make a list of all your books — including their titles, authors, and any other relevant information. Having an inventory will not only help you keep track of your books but also make it easier to find a specific book once you’re settled in your new home.

By following these tips, you can streamline the process of packing your books and ensure they arrive safely at your new destination. Remember to use sturdy boxes and pack them tightly to prevent any damage during transit.

Proper Techniques for Packing Books

A woman holds a moving box while talking to her friend who begins to pull two books off her shelf.

When it comes to packing books for a move, it’s important to use proper techniques to ensure their safety and prevent damage. Here are some tips to help you pack your books efficiently:

Arranging Books

One of Moving Help’s best tips is to arrange the books vertically. We recommend placing the books standing up with the spin touching the edge of the moving books. While doing that, you also can make sure you group your books into the box by height.

Another option is to lay the books completely flat on the bottom of the box. They’ll stay organized and the binding and pages will be less likely to get ruined.

Of course, you can place the pages facing the bottom of the box or placing the binding on the bottom of the box, but both options could ruin your pages and binding. Therefore, you should proceed at your own risk.

Adding Cushioning Materials

Place cushioning materials, such as packing paper or bubble cushion, at the bottom of every book box. You also can place packing paper, enviro-bubble, clothes, or towels between each book.

Fill any empty gaps with packing paper, bubble cushion, clothes, or towels to help avoid your belongings getting damaged during the travel. This provides an extra layer of protection and prevents the books from rubbing against each other, which can cause scratches or other damage.

Utilizing Bookends or Dividers

To prevent shifting during transportation, use bookends or dividers to keep the books in place within the box. This will help maintain the organization and prevent any potential damage that may occur from books moving around.

By following these proper techniques, you can ensure your books arrive at your new home in excellent condition.

Use Suitcases

Many people don’t realize one option to pack books is to use your suitcase. Suitcases are a great option for books because of their portability. You can pack your suitcases with the same packing paper and bubble cushion into the suitcase.

You zip the bag, lift the handle, and roll the bag away. Your suitcase will do all the heavy lifting with your books. Plus, your suitcase will have at least one, if not more, handles in case you need to take your book-filled suitcase up or down a flight of stairs.
